Don’t Want to Produce a Project Around Net.Art Ideas

October 17, 2006

Although I said I think many of the projects within net.art are a waste of time, this is only my opinion but I don’t really think most of the work from this era and field should be looked at too seriously. However saying this I have come across a fair few projects and groups who are trying to make political points. With me saying some of it is a waste of time I am sure some people will think my work that I produce for this module will be as well, however this may be, but I haven’t decided yet.

Finished Reading Net.Art Books

October 17, 2006

I have now read through ‘Internet Art’ and ‘Internet Art: The Clash of Culture and Commerce’ and also researched on the Internet and to be honest I haven’t really been that impressed by the net.art work I have come across and have seen a fair bit of it as a waste of time, for example Jodi.org’s ‘404’. However I found quite a few of the works quite funny which is good but I don’t really think I want to be producing anything for this module within this area.

Net.Art – RTMark

October 17, 2006

I have come across two more pieces of work by RTMark called ‘gatt.org’ (fake WTO site) and ‘gwbush.com’ (fake Bush site) which are both spoof sites of the originals and are quite funny. So people looking for the serious Bush website about his presidential election that was going on at the time the spoof site was uploaded may of come across the joke site by accident and some were probably not very impressed, however I think the projects are quite funny.

Net.Art – FuckU FuckMe

October 17, 2006

In last week’s lecture we were shown a net.art work called ‘FuckU-FuckMe’ by Alexei Shulgin which I’ve read about. This piece is quite funny but what a waste of time it is, especially that the artist has spent the time producing it, when it just seems one big joke, but this is what most net.art work seems to be, a waste of time and a bit of a joke. I read that pornography has a major demand on the net and I’m hoping that this project was produced to make a mockery of this and the people looking for porn.

RTMark ‘Barbie Liberation Organization’

October 16, 2006

While reading ‘Internet Art’ I came across work by RTMark called ‘Barbie Liberation Organization’, where they funded a project to switch voice boxes of 300 GI Joe figures and Barbie dolls. I like their work as it explains that they aim to improve culture and not to benefit their finances. I think this project in particular is good because they took their art work further and away from people viewing it on the Internet, and thrust it onto the unsuspecting outside world and made themselves and their work known to many people and I think the idea is quite funny.

Net.Art Works

October 15, 2006

While researching about net.art I’ve come across two works that have stood out to me that I like. The first is Radio Taxis, ‘Taxi Art’ which is about satellite tracking cabs in a UK taxi company. I like the idea of this and the artwork/piece that has been produced from the data. The second work is I/O/D 4, The Web Stalker which provides an alternative representation of the Internet, showing views of web neighbourhoods. I really like the idea of this, showing the connections from one website to all of the others it is linked to and so forth.

Net.Art Books

October 13, 2006

I brought the two books today, ‘Internet Art’ by Rachel Greene and ’Internet Art: The Online Clash of Culture and Commerce’ by Julian Stallabrass. I’m not too sure whether or not I want work within brief one at the moment because the works we were shown were said to be less of the idea of the Internet with giving and taking and more to do with using the Internet as a medium. I don’t really think that I like this idea but I want to research it thoroughly before I make any decisions.

Introduction To Net.Art

October 12, 2006

We were introduced during the first lecture about net.art and this week we were shown a lot of work within this field and during this era of the 1990’s. I know this is the idea and starting point behind brief one and so I am going to buy the two books we were introduced to on Tuesday to read up about these artists and their work, to get more of an idea about it and to see if I like it enough to develop my own idea under this brief and within this type of Internet art.
