While researching about geotagging I came across a link to Flickr, who have now started up a new aspect to their website where people can geotag their photographs. They provide an overview of how to do it, but its pretty simple all you have to do is basically drag and drop photos to a location. This location can be as specific as the person wants, even down to the street name for example. You can also search for specific things such as photos of architecture in South America.

Geotagging is where items on the Internet such as articles, photos, blogs, videos and pod casts, etc are given geographical data. This geographical data is connected to a photograph for example and then to Google or Yahoo map to show where it was taken. The geographical identification metadata usually includes the longitude and latitude coordinates and also altitude and place names.

Geocaching is a worldwide outdoor treasure hunting game that uses the Internet and a GPS (global positioning system). People all over the world can hide a cache which is a waterproof container that includes a logbook and some sort of treasure. The co-ordinates of this are then put on the Internet for people to download to their GPS and go hunting for it. When someone finds the cache they have to leave a note in the logbook and they can also swap something they have for something they may want from the treasure.

I thought about my ideas some more and have decided not to do my first idea which was to produce a website of my work for the degree show. I only really wanted to do this project to be honest as an easy way out because I hadn’t got any other ideas at the time. I would like to have something to show at the degree show on the net but I can show what ever work I produce from this module which is why I want to produce something quite cool and interesting.

The idea I have which I am most interested in is to produce a website with either virtual record decks or a means of people being able to input a live feed from their decks into the website. This music would them manipulate different videos via Quartz and be projected onto a projection screen, maybe at Uni. People would also be able to watch it live on the Internet and listen to the music. I really like this idea because I am quite interested in VJing at the moment and am working on a similar project in another Module.

The next two ideas I have are only really starting points to base my research around that I am interested in. The first one is the idea of mixing images from Flickr and using Google Earth in some way. The other idea I have is to produce a Dashboard Widget around geo-caching or geo-tagging which I think are quite interesting and look quite fun. From these basic points I am now hoping that by furthering my research I will be able to decide on one of my ideas within the next couple of weeks.

The first idea I have is because of influence from another student who is working under Brief 8 which is open. My initial idea is to produce a website of all my work for promotion at the degree show. The site would include my music, videos, animation, photographs and my project from the Network Aesthetics module which I would start up again, I would also like to include a blog of some sort and a way for people to leave comments about my work.

Yesterday I went to the workshop not having a clue what I wanted to do for a project and was getting a little bit worried. I don’t know what came over me during the workshop but I ended up coming out of it with four basic ideas from which to plan a project around, which made me feel a bit more relaxed about the module. A couple of my ideas I wasn’t sure if I could do them because I’ve got no experience of any of the software but after speaking to Ian I felt it may be possible.

It was quite nice today during the lecture and workshop as most people thought they were cancelled and so the class was no so big. Ian also said he didn’t really have anything planned for today and would just go over things with us, which was really helpful. It was good today as during the workshop we all got time to speak to Ian individually about our ideas and where we are going and got some feedback and help from him to further develop our ideas and plans for our projects.

Although I said I think many of the projects within net.art are a waste of time, this is only my opinion but I don’t really think most of the work from this era and field should be looked at too seriously. However saying this I have come across a fair few projects and groups who are trying to make political points. With me saying some of it is a waste of time I am sure some people will think my work that I produce for this module will be as well, however this may be, but I haven’t decided yet.
